Rebels sign two, still waiting for third

Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002 | 9:40 a.m.

UNLV basketball officials confirmed that they had received national letters-of-intent, via fax, from guard John Winston and junior college center Chris Adams this morning.

Wednesday was the official start of the week-long early-signing period.

They had not secured a written commitment from Michael Umeh, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Missouri City (Texas) Hightower High, but they are expecting it later today. A source familiar with the situation said Umeh's signing is "a done deal, it's all first-class with him."

Winston's signed letter beat Adams' by minutes. The recruiting publication Hoop Scoop rated Winston, a 6-4 guard from the San Francisco Bay Area city of Hercules, among the nation's top 150 prep players.

Adams, a 6-foot-10 center at City College of San Francisco, has been widely tabbed as one of the country's top-50 junior college players. Umeh will likely get a chance to contribute when he arrives, as current floor leader Marcus Banks is a senior.
