Las Vegas bonds are refinanced

The city of Las Vegas is taking advantage of low interest rates and refinancing four bonds, which will save the city about $3.9 million in interest payments, City Treasurer Mike Olson said.

The bonds for sewer, transportation and fire department improvements, as well as the Fremont Street Experience, were issued in 1993 with interest rates ranging from 4.95 percent to 7.1 percent, Olson said. After refinancing the interest rates range from 2.76 percent to 4.51 percent, he said.

The Fremont Street bonds were sold today, Olson said.

The other bonds were refinanced last week, he said.

Man, 21, killed in shootout

Metro Police are investigating the shooting death of a 21-year-old Las Vegas man found in an apartment building's parking lot in the 1000 block of Sierra Vista Street.

Officers responding to a call about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday found the man injured, Sgt. Kevin Manning of Metro's Homicide Section said. The victim was taken to University Medical Center's Trauma Center, where he died from gunshot wounds in his torso.

The victim and several other men wearing red hats and masks had been involved in an argument before the shooting, witnesses told police.

Apparently several handguns were drawn and shots were fired before the other men ran from the area, police said.

Witnesses told police a silver Chrysler minivan left the scene.

Anyone with information on the motive or the identity of the men is urged to call Secret Witness at 385-5555 or Metro Homicide at 229-3521.

Suspect sought in kidnapping

Metro Police detectives are asking the public's help in locating a man who kidnapped a 4-year-old girl from the courtyard of her apartment at Boston and Fairfield avenues Sunday afternoon.

The child was found by friends moments later, two apartment buildings down from her own.

Police are looking for a white man in his late 20s to mid-30s, between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11 and 160 to 180 pounds. He may have short, light brown or blond hair and may have facial hair. He was wearing a long-sleeved, brown button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He might have been riding a black bicycle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro at 229-3111, detectives in the sexual assault unit at 229-3421 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Driver receives critical injuries

A 58-year-old man suffered critical injuries in a two-vehicle crash about 7 a.m. Tuesday at Bermuda Road and Cactus Avenue, Metro Police said.

Domingo Macadangdang of Las Vegas was driving a 1993 BMW north on Bermuda Road when his car was struck by a 1997 Toyota 4-Runner. The driver of the Toyota, Hector Guevara, 27, ran a stop sign at the intersection, police said. The Toyota rolled onto its side and slid before coming to rest in the northeast corner of the intersection.

Macadangdang was in the trauma intensive care unit at University Medical Center this morning, a hospital spokesman said. His passenger, Eleanor Macadangdang, 54, was being treated for moderate injuries.

Guevara suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. His passenger was treated at UMC for minor injuries and released, police said.

No charges have been filed, police said.
