Letter: Democrats need a real leader to rally party
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 | 9:07 a.m.
I am a lifelong Democrat and liberal. My first vote was for Harry Truman for president. That said, I want to congratulate the Republicans on a brilliant, well-organized and well-executed 2002 election campaign. There are some very smart people in the Republican leadership.
The Republicans' boost in popularity began with 9-11 and when that faded, they regained it with their concerns over Iraq. They had a powerful, popular and active leader delivering a coherent message while the Democrats obligingly dithered.
We Democrats need a leader to rally the apparently shrinking party faithful. In retrospect, it appears that we had only one real leader, but he is no longer president. What we need now is a man on a white horse.
