Vegas movie rentals cut

Weakening revenue from video and DVD rentals at Smith's Food and Drug's 118 stores nationwide prompted the grocery chain to close two-thirds of its rental centers -- including 19 in the Las Vegas area and Pahrump.

But Smith's said it is keeping one video and DVD rental center open at a Henderson store at 830 S. Boulder Highway because of "exceptionally high rental use and profitability there," said spokeswoman Marsha Gilford.

In Business Las Vegas, a sister newspaper to the Las Vegas Sun, reported in its Nov. 8 edition that Smith's closed most of its movie rental centers because of competition from video and DVD rental chains, satellite TV and cable television.

Smith's will continue to sell videos and DVDs -- a segment that has remained profitable.
