Rebel men knock off league-leading Lobos
Since 1991, no Rebel team had captured 11 victories in a season. Eleven years later, the UNLV men's soccer team did just that with a 2-0 shutout of 22nd-ranked and league leader New Mexico Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
In both team's regular season closer, the rival Lobos (15-3, 5-1 MPSF) suffered their only conference loss of the year and will now share the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season title with San Jose State.
The third-seeded Rebels (11-7, 4-2) will take on sixth-seeded Air Force (8-9-1, 2-4) in the MPSF Tournament held Thursday-Sunday in Albuquerque.
The winner advances to Friday's semifinals against top-seeded New Mexico.
Oakland GM Beane opts against job in Boston
Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane withdrew from consideration for the same job with the Boston Red Sox, ending a whirlwind weekend in which he was widely expected to leave.
Hurricanes regain top spot in AP Top 25
Miami regained the top spot in The Associated Press media poll. With Oklahoma losing to Texas A&M 30-26 and Miami overpowering Tennessee 26-3, the Hurricanes (9-0) received all 74 first-place votes from writers and broadcasters on the AP panel.
Ohio State (11-0), the only other unbeaten major-college team, moved up to No. 2 from No. 3 after its 10-6 win over Purdue.
Serena will face Clijsters in final
Top-seeded Serena Williams overcame her own uneven play to beat No. 3 Jennifer Capriati 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the WTA Championships semifinals in Los Angeles. Older sister Venus was forced out by a leg injury trailing 5-0 in the first set of her semifinal against Kim Clijsters.
Sorenstam wins her 10th event of the year
Annika Sorenstam became the first LPGA player in 34 years to win 10 times in one season, defending her Mizuno Classic title in Japan.
