Regent Alden diagnosed with cancer of prostate

Monday, Nov. 11, 2002 | 9:04 a.m.

Regent Mark Alden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will likely elect to have his prostate gland removed to treat his condition.

Alden, who has served on the Board of Regents for eight years, said that irregularities were found during a routine doctor visit, and a biopsy confirmed it was cancer.

"I am very optimistic about recovery," Alden said. "I have a great team of doctors and the long-term success rate is in my favor."

Alden is the third public official in recent months to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Gov. Kenny Guinn underwent surgery to have his prostate removed in September. Community College of Southern Nevada President Ron Remington was also diagnosed with prostate cancer this summer and chose to have a localized form of radiation treatment.
