Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 | 9:37 a.m.

A winter storm warning is in effect through tonight for the eastern slopes of the Southern Sierra Nevada, the National Weather Service in Las Vegas said today while issuing a hazardous weather outlook for the region.

Weather Service officials say a strong but relatively warm Pacific storm front is crossing the region. Significant snow accumulations are expected above 8,500 feet, while blustery winds and scattered light showers were expected for the desert areas, with a 40 percent chance of rain for Las Vegas.

Highs in the upper 60s under mostly cloudy skies were expected today for Las Vegas, with winds out of the southwest at 20-30 mph, the Weather Service said.

Windy, partly cloudy skies and highs around 70 are expected for the weekend, Veterans Day and Tuesday. Mostly sunny skies are projected for Wednesday and Thursday, the Weather Service said.
