Holiday crafts

The Junior Mesquite Club of Las Vegas presents its 18th annual "A Frosty Holiday" craft auction at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mesquite Clubhouse, 702 E. St. Louis Ave. Admission is $5, deducted from first purchase. Proceeds benefit Shade Tree Shelter. 243-9406.

A variety

"Thunderheart," starring Val Kilmer and Sam Shepard, a 1992 film about a Native American FBI agent who suppresses his heritage, screens at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Library auditorium, 5400 Harris Ave. Admission is free.

Also at Sunrise Library auditorium is "Smoke Signals," a 1998 film about a road trip by two young men from a reservation in northern Idaho to Phoenix, at 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. 507-3900.

As part of UNLV's International Film Series, "Happy Times" (2002 China), will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday in UNLV's Classroom Building Complex, Room A106. Admission is free. Mature audiences only. 895-3547.

Spring Mountain

Spring Mountain Free Trappers present a variety of primitive camps and events about mountain men and women. Participants will be in period costume. Events and demonstrations include black powder rifles, making ammunition, knife forging, leather work, bead work and storytelling at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, 15 miles west of Las Vegas via West Charleston Boulevard. Programs are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Park entrance fee is $5 per vehicle. 875-4141.

Arts district

Las Vegas' Cultural Affairs Division presents "A Day in the Arts District" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Main Street and Charleston Boulevard. Visit art galleries, antique and vintage clothing shops, studios, merchants and restaurants for special events scheduled every hour. Admission is free. 229-5431.

Southern Paiutes

Photographer Michael Plyler and writer Logan Hebner discuss their traveling exhibit, "Southern Paiutes: A Portrait," chronicling the lives of 14 members of the Paiute Indian Tribes of Utah, at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd. Admission is free. 507-3820.

Storytelling

Retired elementary schoolteacher Judy Trejo shares stories and songs about the Paiute and Shoshone people at 4 p.m. today at Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Admission is free. 507-3630.
