Sen. Harry Reid heralded the signing of the Clark County Public Lands and Natural Resources Act of 2002 as "a broad, bipartisan compromise that will balance growth and development while protecting natural resources."
President Bush signed into law Wednesday the bill that will add 444,000 acres in Clark County to the national wilderness preservation system.
Reid, D-Nev., working with Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., and Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., throughout a lengthy process, said the sweeping land management legislation will serve as a comprehensive conservation and growth plan for public lands in Clark County for generations to come,
The bill, introduced earlier this year by Reid and Ensign, passed the Senate unanimously on Oct. 18, days after identical legislation introduced by Gibbons passed the House.
The new law also:
"The lands bill is the culmination of over a year of work by a diverse group of Southern Nevadans who are truly concerned about the future of Clark County," Ensign said. "We will look back 30 years from now and realize how this legislation contributed to the quality of life we cherish in Southern Nevada."
