Recreation area burns tamarisk

Four prescribed fires in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area were completed during October.

The National Park Service eradicated tamarisk, a non-native plant that invades riverbanks and springs, at Rogers Springs between Echo Bay and Overton Beach.

The other three burns were in Arizona at Pine Valley Ranch, Green Springs East and Pleasant Valley East.

The Arizona burns are expected to encourage more diverse plant growth, particularly of native grasses, a Park Service statement said.

Restrictions set for watercraft

Although personal watercraft will be allowed to operate on Lakes Mead and Mohave from Nov. 6 until Dec. 31, some restrictions will apply, the National Park Service said.

No jet skis will be allowed from below Hoover Dam to the marker buoy above Willow Beach; from the marker buoy below Willow Beach to Eldorado Canyon; at Bonnelli Bay and Gypsum Bay; from Iceberg Canyon to the boundary of the Grand Canyon; and in the Overton Arm north of Black Ridge.

The lakes remain open with a 200-foot personal watercraft wakeless zone extending from all shorelines.

On Jan. 1 all personal watercraft and jet skis will be banned until a record of decision and an environmental impact statement are issued on a lake management plan. Both are expected by early spring of 2003.
