VegasBeat — Timothy McDarrah: LV dignitaries benefit in the long run

They are not running to New York, but several prominent Las Vegans certainly will hit the pavement hard once they get there.

The diverse group will do its best to represent our city in Sunday's 33rd annual New York City Marathon.

Among those lacing up the track shoes will be Bill Snyder of Tate Snyder Kimsey Architects in Henderson, who will be running his fourth New York and 20th marathon overall; public relations Svengali David Kirvin; architect George Garlock; Mousey Richardson, daughter of Mandalay Bay Vice Chairman William A. Richardson; Terri Janison, wife of KLAS Channel 8 weather forecaster Kevin Janison; KTNV Channel 13 sports anchor Ron Futrell; and Sandy Wolff, owner of the new Absolute Fitness gym on Rainbow and Charleston boulevards.

Wolff started her running career after battling back from cancer and aggressive treatments.

KLUC 98.5-FM "Morning Zoo" co-host Amy Sweet is also a marathoner, but is skipping this year's trek through the five boroughs because she is pregnant.

Back in New York I covered the marathon a few times. I got tired just riding in the press truck for 26 miles.

Comin' up

VegasBeat had a nice chat Thursday with the hugely influential Anthony Deering, chairman of the board and CEO of The Rouse Co., at the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce breakfast heralding the Fashion Show mall expansion.

He hinted that Rita Brandin, the company's Las Vegas veep for store development, was getting a big promotion because of her spectacular work on the Fashion Show project.

Look for an official announcement as soon as today.

Score!

I was reading the sports section the other day and came across some hockey scores.

Apparently the NHL season is under way. Which one is Bobby Hull?

And when did they put a team in Nashville?

Anyway, in my book, it is always baseball season. That is why VegasBeat is going to a ceremony on Monday announcing the 2002 Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame inductees -- Greg Maddux will be there.

The former Valley High School and current major league star will be joined by his brother and fellow major league hurler Mike Maddux (Rancho High School), plus Mike Morgan, Lori Harrigan and beloved Eldorado, Valley and Green Valley coach Rodger Fairless.

The event is open to the public and takes place at 5:30 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Room at Findlay Toyota on Auto Show Drive in Henderson.

Ready, aim

All those years arguing in a courtroom came in handy for Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman on Wednesday.

He was on "Crossfire," the spirited national political debate program on CNN, humorously defending his endorsement deal with Bombay Sapphire gin.

He also explained how he had tried to get computers into Las Vegas but ended up with strippers.

"I thought someone said we could get laptops. Turned out it was lap dances."

Even his critics would say that Hizzoner shined during his 10 minutes with the bow-tied Tucker Carlson and Goodman's occasional lunch pal, James Carville -- who suggested on the air that Goodman would be a viable candidate for national office.

VegasBeat ran into Goodman later that evening at an event at the Art Institute of Las Vegas.

"Can you imagine me as vice president?" the mayor mused, a martini in one hand and a small plate of Salmon Oscar (really) in the other.

"But I love Las Vegas too much to ever leave," he said between bites.

"I wish I could eat more of this -- it is delicious. But I am still on my diet, you know."

Goodman patted his belly and said his diet was right on track. He added that he would have a weight update for VegasBeat early next week.

Love knot

Credit Paul McCartney for Karin Tomcik and Danny Zitting finally getting hitched last weekend.

Tomcik, a public relations specialist for the Las Vegas company The Firm, saw Sir Paul at MGM Grand Garden Arena with her childhood friend, Kristi Sciullo, a Pittsburgh marketing executive.

Tomcik, 30, was the only witness to Sciullo's wedding.

As the women were recounting the McCartney show Sunday morning to Zitting, Sciullo said it sure would be convenient if Danny and Karin tied the knot while she was in town.

So Zitting, 25, a mechanical engineer for Macrotech Polyseal Inc., turned to Tomcik and proposed: "Will you marry me ... today?"

She said yes, and they ran off to Fashion Show mall to get a ring.

Five hours later -- before it was dark -- they were at the Graceland Wedding Chapel, and the deed was done. They spent their first night of wedded bliss in a suite at Monte Carlo.

"His family was very good with it -- all they were really concerned with was there still going to be a party," Tomcik told VegasBeat.

"Mine didn't take it so well, but they seem to be coming around. I always warned them it would happen that way."

The couple had been together for more than two years.

Monday it was back to work for both, but a honeymoon and party are in the works.

Zip code

I have certainly been called a pinhead (among other things), but one has never opened for me before.

Before today, that is.

Comic artist Bill Griffith, of Zippy the Pinhead fame, precedes me this afternoon on KNUU 970-AM (K-News) before VegasBeat's regular gig at 3:30 p.m.

Griffith is here for this weekend's inaugural Vegas Valley Book Fair.

David Copperfield follows.
