PUC approves telephone rate increase

Wednesday, May 29, 2002 | 11:10 a.m.

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has unanimously approved a $43.5 million rate increase that will raise monthly Southern Nevada residential phone service from $9.05 to $10.40 before taxes and from $18.25 to $20.75 a month for businesses.

In a special meeting Tuesday, commissioners approved rates outlined in a stipulation agreed upon last week by Sprint Corp., the consumer advocate's office, the PUC staff and competitors acting as intervenors in the case.

The new rates take effect July 1 and are locked in for five years, although Sprint will be allowed to petition for an increase in July 2004 if conditions warrant it.

When the stipulation was accepted by PUC presiding officer Adriana Escobar Chanos last week, it had the endorsement of Sprint Nevada General Manager Lou Emmert and Consumer Advocate Tim Hay.
