Letter: Use surplus to reduce debt

Wednesday, May 29, 2002 | 9:25 a.m.

The only parts of the federal budget in the black are Social Security and Medicare. They are being borrowed from. The main effect of this borrowing will be on the economy. These surplus funds should be used to reduce the national debt. This has been done for four recent years.

There are four trust funds -- two for Social Security and two for Medicare. At the last accounting, they held assets totaling almost $1.3 trillion. The Budget Office projects they will grow by $2.5 trillion over the next decade.

What if all government workers were on Social Security? Along with this we could push for socialized medical benefits. If Fidel has it for the Cubans, why not have it for us Americans?
