Las Vegas native Andre Agassi and defending champion Jennifer Capriati wrapped up first-round wins today as the weather cleared after two rainy days at the French Open.
No. 2 Venus Williams was among the first players to reach the third round, routing Wynne Prakusya 6-0, 6-1.
But American Andy Roddick's stay at Roland Garros was a short one. Wayne Arthurs hit 25 aces and rallied to beat the 13th-seeded Roddick 4-6, 7-6 (14), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a first-round match. Capriati beat fellow American Marissa Irvin 6-3, 6-4 in a match carried over from Tuesday, while Agassi overwhelmed French qualifier Eric Prodon 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
In another first-round match, third-seeded Serena Williams made quick work of Martina Sucha, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Anna Kournikova, meanwhile, made another first-round exit, losing to Christiana Wheeler of Australia, 6-4, 6-3.
