Absenteeism forcing cut in restaurant operations

Wednesday, May 29, 2002 | 11:10 a.m.

WINDSOR, Ontario -- Casino Windsor is preparing to close one of its restaurants two days each week because too many staff refuse to show up for work, the company said Tuesday.

The casino operators said they are struggling with a chronic employee absentee problem so severe that up to one-fifth of its staff is calling in "sick" at peak business times on weekends.

And with the weather improving, the problem is about to get worse, casino executives said.

Last summer absenteeism at the publicly owned, privately managed casino topped 500 call-ins out of a staff of 2,500.

The no-shows are hurting service levels and threatening Casino Windsor's competitive position with Detroit's three casinos, said Ron Barbaro, chairman of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

To cope, the casino will be closing one of its six restaurants and reassigning staff "to make up for the people who don't show up," company spokesman Jim Mundy said.
