Memorial Day services on tap across Nevada
Monday, May 27, 2002 | 2:22 a.m.
Memorial Day services will be held across Nevada on Monday to honor the nation's war dead.
Officials said the services have taken on added meaning this year because of the Sept. 11 attacks and the war against terrorism.
"I hope everyone takes time to pause and remember those who are no longer with us," Gov. Kenny Guinn said.
In northern Nevada, Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., will head a list of speakers at an 11 a.m. service at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno.
Gibbons is the lone member of Congress who served in both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars.
In nearby Fernley, retired Army Col. Chuck Fulkerson of Reno will be the keynote speaker at an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Fulkerson, a Vietnam veteran, is executive director of the Nevada Office of Veteran Services.
In southern Nevada, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., will speak at three services Monday.
Reid will speak at a 9 a.m. American Legion service in Las Vegas, and an 11 a.m. American Legion service in Henderson. Both will be held at Palm Mortuary.
Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., and Rep. Shelley Berkley are scheduled to attend the Henderson service.
Reid also will speak at a 1 p.m. American Ex-Prisoners of War service at the Southern Nevada Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
Also holding services in Las Vegas will be the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Council of Nevada Veterans Organizations.
