Firefighters receive medals of valor

Friday, May 24, 2002 | 9:18 a.m.

Four Las Vegas firefighters from the Nevada Division of Forestry have been awarded medals of valor for trying to save the life of a man who set himself on fire.

Gov. Kenny Guinn presented the medals to Steve Brittingham, Troy Guinn, Don Sager and Victor Mancilla at the Safety Summit hosted by area wildland fire agencies.

The four firefighters were responding to a wildfire in Lee Canyon at Mount Charleston on June 17, 2001, when a man ran into the fire and subsequently started a second fire. The man was restrained and the firefighters administered lifesaving procedures. The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he eventually died.
