CARSON CITY -- The Nevada Arts Council has voted to allocate $392,127 to 86 cultural groups across the state for such events as dance and music programs, jazz festivals, theater groups and art exhibits for next fiscal year.
Susan Boskoff, executive director of the council, said Thursday the groups had asked for $693,156. She said she does not know whether Gov. Kenny Guinn, in his attempt to balance the budget, will reduce the amount available.
All of the money that comes from an appropriation by the Legislature must be matched by the local groups within three years. Grants for Southern Nevada include $9,998 for the Las Vegas Art Museum; $2,950 for the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada; $2,723 for the International Festival Association of North Las Vegas; $2,013 for the American Dance Company; $1,101 for the Guitar Society of Las Vegas; $4,388 for The Desert Chorale and $1,805 for the International House of Blues Foundation.
There were also grants to local government art projects at such places as the Community College of Southern Nevada, the city of Henderson, public libraries in Henderson and the UNLV-Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery.
Boskoff also said that an additional $389,930 will be released next fiscal year in grants to organizations that were approved for a two-year funding cycle.
