Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins will get a free ride this election year after all, thanks to the withdrawal of an opponent with a similar name.
Kelwin Perkins had filed to run against Perkins, D-Henderson, on the last day of the filing period.
Perkins said he had anticipated an opponent because a Republican jumped into each of his past races on the last day of filing.
Kelwin Perkins withdrew from the race Wednesday, leaving the incumbent with no opposition.
Supreme Court justice candidate Mark Gibbons, state Sen. Terry Care, Assemblywomen Chris Giunchigliani and Genie Ohrenschall and 14 District Court judges also have no opponents.
