Add South Africa to the list of red wine producing countries that are tightening the noose around the neck of the California wine industry. These wines tend to be excellent values, at half the price of comparable wines from the Golden State. This Merlot is surprisingly soft and supple, with hints of cherry and spice. It's a bit smoky on the palate, a nice match for game and red meat. It's a wine that can be cellared with anticipation.
