Nevada employers honored

Wednesday, May 22, 2002 | 11:09 a.m.

The Southern Nevada chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) honored three companies, the AFL-CIO and three government entities for establishing equitable pay policies for employees.

The companies are Sprint Corp., Sierra Health Services Inc. and Southwest Gas Corp. Also honored were Washoe County and the cities of Henderson and North Las Vegas.

Lynn Vertner, local chapter NOW president, said the seven entities were named because they hired employees based on their qualifications and regularly reviewed their pay policies to ensure compensation is based on qualifications, effort, performance and results -- and not on gender.

NOW said the wage gap between male and female workers has narrowed by only 14 cents since 1963, when the Equal Pay Act was passed. Women were paid on average 59 cents to the dollar received by men in 1963, while women were paid 73 cents for every dollar received by men in 2000.
