County briefs for May 22, 2002

Wednesday, May 22, 2002 | 9:45 a.m.

Clark County officials are working toward improving their website so residents can not only access information but conduct business transactions online.

A steering committee made up of county administrators, representatives from Las Vegas and North Las Vegas and business and industry leaders will explore methods to improve the site.

The new and improved website will, for example, include opportunities to sign up online for sports through the Parks and Recreation Department.

The county's website, which allows residents to access parcel numbers and information, aerial maps and business license information, received 4.5 million hits in April.

Changes urged to comment periods

Residents who wish to speak during the public comment period at Clark County Commission meetings soon might not have to sit through hundreds of agenda items to have their chance.

Clark County Commission Chairman Dario Herrera asked staff members to explore how other government bodies time their public comment period. Herrera said it is unfair for residents, especially those who work, to have to sit for hours before having a chance to speak.

Herrera recommended a designated time at the beginning of the meeting, but other commissioners were concerned that people who made arrangements to have their item on the agenda might be inconvenienced.
