Get out the hiking boots for Red Rock
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge, but reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information, call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:
The Back Side: A two-mile moderate hike will be held Thursday to explore the swirls and curls of the Calicos from the back side.
Day Camp: Learn about plants and animals during the Red Rock Day Camp, which includes a seven-mile hike on Friday along the Lost Creek Discovery Trail.
Reptile Watch: the program will be presented by Ranger Jim on a two-mile hike that includes hunting for reptiles.
Ultimate Survivor: Cactus Jack will tell fables and facts about the ultimate survivor as he presents the program "Karaoke with the Coyotes" Friday on a four-mile easy hike.
Trail Talk: Join Gina for short presentations on all of the trails at Red Rock Canyon, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Friends Room of the Visitors Center.
Storytelling in the Canyon: Scheduled at 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, bring a picnic lunch and join Vicki at the Willow Springs Picnic Area for American Indian Folklore.
In other events, learn about "The Noble Coyote," the exceptionally smart desert dog and how it survived despite excessive intervention, while hiking the Knolls Trail on Sunday; and try "The Cave," a two-mile moderate hike exploring Monday Red Rock Canyon's largest cave. Program includes learning about a cave's ecosystem.
The second annual Beach Party
will be from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Basic Road and Water Street in Henderson and will feature the Turtles, the Rinker Kids Corner with a 22-foot inflatable slide, jump tents, inflatable obstacle course and trackless train. Tickets are $5. Call 565-2181.

(a total of 10 is allowed) in the 19th annual Nevada Camera Club Slide Competition to be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. June 8 at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave. The entry fee is $2 per slide and an entry form to accompany the slides. For more information call Ed 454-1961 or Brent at 898-9856.
