Letter: Clinton’s lies not as serious as this president’s
Monday, May 20, 2002 | 9:18 a.m.
I believe most Americans look back on the Clinton years as having been generally good ones. President Clinton had his personal frailties, but as president he did a good job, especially in leading the country through economic recovery.
Today unemployment is at its highest level since 1992. In making the comparison we find the 1992 rate of unemployment was in decline from previous highs under Bush I. Today the rate is increasing from previous Clinton lows. Unemployment benefit claims are the highest they have been in 19 years. Bush II's continuing statements that the recession is over are not translating at the workplace.
The Review-Journal has another significant local problem in its attempt to keep conservatives in power. Bush lied to us about Yucca Mountain. In comparing presidential lies, Monica Lewinsky vs. Yucca Mountain, Nevada voters may well conclude that the latter is the much more serious.
The November mid-term elections are rapidly approaching. Democrats are looking to recapture both the House and the Senate. What's left for the R-J, except to return to its old strategy of Clinton-bashing?
