Comment asked on plan for lakes
The National Park Service has scheduled meetings for public comment on the environmental impact at Lake Mead and Lake Mohave of recreation activities such as skiing, boating, fishing, swimming and personal watercraft use.
The Park Service plan for improving the lakes includes four alternatives.
The preferred alternative would allow a slight increase in boating activity; carrying capacity for the lakes would be set; uniform boating laws and mandatory boater education programs would be developed; and boat operators would be prohibited from drinking alcohol.
Meetings are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cashman Center, Rooms 107 and 108, Las Vegas Boulevard North and Washington Avenue; Wednesday at the Lighthouse Motel in Boulder City and Thursday in Kingman, Ariz.
Driver killed in one-car crash
A 37-year-old Las Vegas man died and a woman was injured in a one-car accident near downtown Las Vegas Thursday night.
Modesto A. Morales was driving a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass east on Stewart Avenue near Flower Avenue about 9 p.m. on a closed portion of the roadway. He attempted to merge onto the paved part of the roadway and apparently lost control, Metro Police said.
The car spun over a dirt mound and continued to spin before coming to rest on its left side. Morales was ejected from the car, police said.
Morales died shortly after arriving at University Medical Center. The passenger, Sheryl Casas, 24, of Las Vegas, sustained minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital, police said.
One dies in crash near Glendale
A Henderson woman died and two others were injured in a one-car accident on a stretch of Interstate 15 Thursday between Glendale and Mesquite.
Kerry Lee Marshall, 39, died after the car she was driving went off the roadway and rolled about 50 miles north of Las Vegas about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.
Two passengers, Kimberly Williams, 26, and Bella Bernard, 47, were taken to University Medical Center and were listed in good condition Thursday.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Carjacker shoots woman at park
A 46-year-old woman was shot twice in the leg today by a carjacker at Potosi Park in western Las Vegas.
The woman was getting out of her Ford Mustang about 7 a.m. at the park at Tara Avenue and Mohawk Street, near Decatur Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, when she was confronted by a gunman, Metro Police said.
The carjacker apparently shot the woman twice while taking her car. The robber then sped off in the woman's car, but lost control of the car a few blocks away and crashed into some parked cars, police said.
The suspect then fled from the wreck and remained on the loose as police searched the area today.
The woman was taken to University Medical Center and was listed in fair condition.
Two new restaurants
are opening at Neonopolis downtown. La Salsa, offering traditional Mexican cuisine, opened Thursday. The Saloon, a Southwestern-style bar and restaurant, will open Saturday.
