Maine residents to vote on casino development

Friday, May 17, 2002 | 10:54 a.m.

YORK, Maine -- Voters will go the polls Saturday in a nonbinding referendum on whether they would like to see a casino in southern Maine.

The referendum is the first town-wide vote on the issue since Maine's Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indians floated the idea of developing a Foxwoods-style resort and casino in the Kittery area.

Last month Kittery approved a zoning change to ban casinos. Michael Palumbo, chairman of the York Board of Selectmen, said his town will likely do the same if voters are sour on the idea.

York also will choose two selectmen and a school committee member and decide on budget proposals that could raise taxes by nearly 13 percent.
