Residents invited to join annual conference

Residents are welcome to participate in the fourth annual Neighborhood Congress, a free one-day conference from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

The Congress offers interactive workshops on a variety of topics. The conference will also offer a series of inter-generational workshops to show youth and adults how they can work together and collaborate to improve their community.

Free lectures on tap by judges, attorneys

A free lecture series on legal topics will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through June 26 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Humanities Building.

The series is offered by the People's Law School as a public service. Each week's program will explore two legal topics with the help of Nevada attorneys, judges and legislators who have volunteered their time and talent to community service projects.

Take an easy walk or strenuous hike

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and other educational programs free of charge, but reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information, call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

Mindful Walking: A walking yoga program Saturday. Cost is $25 per person or $40 for a couple.

Easy Strolling: An easy, short walk in the canyon on Sunday to learn some of the canyon's secrets.

Scrambling to Big Falls: A four-mile strenuous hike Sunday with Cactus Jack on his annual outing to watch the meltdown of Charleston's peaks, plus a Cold War spy story from Kyle Canyon.

An Evening Walk with Bats: A slide program at the visitor center on bats and a short hike to the guzzler at White Rock to look and listen for bats Sunday. RSVP.

"Cops & Lobsters,"

The Barbara Greenspun WomensCare

Center of Excellence, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite No. 330, will offer a seminar on weight reduction through hypnotherapy 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday. Bill Hershey, certified by the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association, will explain to participants how hypnosis can be used to lose weight and maintain the results. The American Cancer Society

is hosting a free educational skin cancer class from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at 1325 E. Harmon Ave., to teach individuals how to protect themselves from skin cancer. For more information or to reserve a seat, call 798-6877.

The 19th annual International AIDS

Candlelight Memorial will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church, 2100 S. Maryland Parkway, to honor the memory of those lost to HIV/AIDS, to raise awareness of and show support for those living with the disease, and to mobilize community involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
