Male Athlete of the Week: B.J. WILLIAMS
School: Desert Pines
Class: Junior
Sport: Track
Last week: Williams finished first in two individual events and helped his team capture two relays as the Jaguars topped Silverado by two points for the 4A Sunrise Region championship on Friday. Williams won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.81, took the 400 meter dash in 49.9 and ran on the victorious 4x200 and 4x400 relay squads. "Last year, he was pretty much an alternate on the relay for us, and he's made great strides this year," Desert Pines coach Freddie Thompson said. "It's been a great transformation, and it couldn't have happened to a better kid. He worked really hard in the offseason and got stronger, and he's been a pleasant surprise for us."
Female Athlete of the Week: ALLISON CARNEY
School: Centennial
Class: Senior
Sport: Track
Last week: Carney captured two individual distance events, qualified for state in a third and helped a relay team earn a spot at state as well, as the Bulldogs rolled to the 4A Sunset Region title on Friday. Carney won the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.84 and finished first in the 1,600 meters in 5:19.52. Her fourth-place time of 12:08.66 in the 3,200 meters was enough to advance to state, as was her squad's second-place time of 10:34.25 in the 4x800 relay. "She's one of our captains and she's an outstanding role model," Centennial coach Bill Miller said. "She's really focused, running like a veteran with tremendous confidence. Last year, she was a little tentative. This year, she knows she can run with anyone."
