Savvy wine buys: Seghesio ‘00 Sonoma Zinfandel
Wednesday, May 15, 2002 | 8:29 a.m.
Zinfandel is the one grape that only grows in California, though the varietal has been genetically linked both to southern Italy and Croatia. It's a dark, complex, spicy grape that produces a powerfully alcoholic wine, such as this one, which comes in at a staggering 14.6 percent. Seghesio is one of the oldest California Zinfandels, first planted by an Italian immigrant in the Alexander Valley, circa 1895. The experience shows. This is a terrific, barrel-aged wine great for summer barbecues, strong enough to stand up to any red sauce or even pizza.
Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $14.99.
