Berkley files for a third term in House

Rep. Shelley Berkley filed Monday for a third term in Congress representing Nevada's 1st District.
Berkley, a 51-year-old Democrat, was first elected in 1998 and defeated state Sen. Jon Porter in 2000 for election to her second term.
She said being a congresswoman is "the most challenging job I have ever had."
Complete with what she termed "24-7" commitment to the post, Berkley said representing the people of the nation's fastest growing community helps her better understand the needs of all Americans.
Berkley serves on the House Committees on Transportation and Infrastructure, Veterans Affairs and International Relations and was appointed to the Task Force on Homeland Security.
Her role on the transportation committee not only helps Nevada get infrastructure dollars for projects, but, she said, helped secure airline travel -- the lifeblood of Las Vegas' tourist economy -- after Sept. 11.
She also serves on an International Relations sub-committee focusing on the Middle East.
"I can't think of a more important committee to be a part of right now," Berkley added.
She has lived in Las Vegas for 39 years and graduated from UNLV. Berkley received her law degree at the University of San Diego Law School and has served as both an assemblywoman and member of the state Board of Regents.
Las Vegas Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald is expected to file as a Republican opponent to Berkley.
