Union election under way

A vote was under way Thursday for more than 370 non-professional employees of Valley Hospital on whether they will be represented by Service Employees International Union Local 1107.

This election is the second since 1999. It targets employees like buyers, cashiers, clerical assistants, video technicians, radiology technicians and assistant nursing trainees.

One hundred twenty-nine non-professional Valley employees voted against representation, while 124 voted for, at the SEIU's first election at Valley Hospital in May 1999, said Mike Chavez, NLRB's resident officer.

Chavez said the union also lost a 1999 election to represent 88 clerical employees, with 61 voting against and 16 voting for representation. He said these clerks aren't part of the second election.

But registered nurses voted for SEIU representation and the hospital has since signed a collective bargaining agreement with the union for them.
