Tropicana dealer seeks decertification of union

A dealer at the Las Vegas Strip's Tropicana hotel-casino filed a petition Wednesday with the National Labor Relations Board to decertify an estimated 145 table game dealers represented by the Transport Workers Union.

Suzette Parker, a Tropicana dealer, could not be reached for comment on why she filed the petition. It was filed about a month after dealers at the Stratosphere hotel-casino voted to decertify the union.

TWU Local 721, which represents about 525 dealers in Las Vegas, says it's trying to negotiate a contract with the Tropicana. It won a union election there in January 2001.

The union reached its first collective bargaining agreement with the New Frontier in March.

Timothy Grandfield, TWU's International director of organizing, said he suspects the decertification petition may have been prompted by Tropicana management.

"A couple of managers were dissatisfied with the way the collective bargaining negotiations were being done," he said. "We're negotiating the first-ever pension plan for Las Vegas dealers. The Tropicana has agreed to the pension plan but we're still negotiating the amount to be contributed by Tropicana and issues like wage increases and seniority."
