Sunset golf finally settled by tiebreaker
Friday, May 10, 2002 | 9:14 a.m.
A wildly close 4A Sunset Region Boys Golf Tournament came down to a tiebreaker Thursday at SilverStone Golf Club.
Deadlocked at 390 strokes apiece through five golfers, Bonanza and Durango went to their alternate, with the Bengals' Wade Monk edging Joe Wattoo 86-91.
That gave the Bengals the Sunset's third and final berth to next week's 4A State Tournament. They will join Palo Verde, which won the region with a total score of 380, and Bishop Gorman, which finished three strokes behind the Panthers.
Fifth-place Mojave also had a strong showing, scoring 396 to wind up just six strokes behind Bonanza and Durango and only 16 strokes off the lead.
The Gaels' Jonathan Taruc captured the Sunset's individual title, shooting a 4-under 68. Durango's Robert Flores (72), Palo Verde's Brandon Loska (73), Bonanza's Joseph Wieser (74) and Palo Verde's Jeremy Keller (74) rounded out the top five.
The Sunrise Region also featured a battle for the three state team berths, with Silverado edging Las Vegas 407-408 for the final spot. First-year Coronado bested Green Valley 398-399 for the title.
Coronado's Matt Edwards won the Sunrise's individual championship with a 70, and was followed by Silverado's Brad Henson (74), Green Valley's Dustin Robbins (75), Basic's Matt Davies (76) and Valley's Nick Green (76).
Bonanza downed Clark 10-0, then rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Durango 14-5. Las Vegas shut out Valley 4-0, then held on for a 5-4 win over Green Valley.
In other action Thursday, Eldorado topped Silverado 3-2 to stay unbeaten in Sunrise Region play, while Centennial defeated Palo Verde 4-0 to remain in the winner's bracket of the Sunset draw.
Competition concludes today, with games at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. at Henderson's Stephanie Lynn Craig Complex.
In the Sunrise Region, the Wolves improved to 22-0 with a 15-10, 15-5, 15-4 victory over Las Vegas, while Chaparral upped its record to 21-1 with a 15-3, 15-12, 15-12 triumph over Green Valley.
In the Sunset, Palo Verde downed Bonanza 15-11, 15-12, 19-17, and Centennial outlasted Durango 16-14, 15-3, 8-15, 15-4.
