Mark Gibbons files for Young’s post on Supreme Court

CARSON CITY -- District Judge Mark Gibbons of Las Vegas says the Nevada Supreme Court might be able to speed up processing of cases by using more senior judges.

Gibbons, 51, who filed Thursday to replace retiring Justice Cliff Young on the court, said the seven-member Supreme Court now sits in two panels of three judges to hear and decide cases. He said a third panel could be created with retired judges, expediting the process by 50 percent.

So far no one has filed against Gibbons.

During his six years in office, Gibbons has presided over more than 100 civil and criminal jury trials, including 13 murder cases in Southern Nevada.

Gibbons gained his law degree from Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles in 1975 and moved to Las Vegas, where he was in private practice until his election in November 1996 to District Court.

Gibbons is a member of a Nevada Supreme Court jury improvement commission that is considering ways to improve the jury system. It is expected to release its recommendations in July.

He said he has raised nearly $200,000 for his campaign.
