BLM will auction 216 acres

The federal Bureau of Land Management will offer 216 acres of the Las Vegas Valley for sale Tuesday.

The parcels, scattered throughout the valley, range from a little over an acre to 30 acres in size. Minimum bids range from $900,000 to $4 million.

The 30-acre parcel and many of the other larger pieces are in the northwest part of the valley, one of the fastest growing areas.

The sale is authorized by 1998's Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act. The Tuesday sale is the sixth auction under the act, which so far has sold 2,571 acres and provided nearly $125 million for the purchase of environmentally sensitive land in Southern Nevada.

The act also pays for capital improvements at four federal recreation and conservation areas in the Las Vegas region, including Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon. The act has also provided about $10.6 million for the Nevada school trust fund, $18.4 million to the Southern Nevada Water Authority and $24.1 million for protection of Lake Tahoe.

"All the revenue generated by the land sales stays in Nevada, BLM State Director Bob Abbey said. "We have a unique opportunity in this state to make land available where it is needed for growth and use the revenue generated to protect environmentally sensitive area along with providing more and better opportunities for outdoor recreation."

To view maps and appraisals, would-be bidders can go to the BLM's Las Vegas Field Office at 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive in Las Vegas or visit the agency's website (www.nv.blm.gov).

All parcels will be offered by oral auction beginning 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Clark County Commission Chambers, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas. All bidders are required to register.
