Male Athlete of the Week: SEAN KAZMAR
School: Las Vegas
Class: Senior
Sport: Baseball
Last week: Kazmar went 6-for-7 with three extra base hits, six RBIs and six runs scored to help the Wildcats defeat Rancho and Desert Pines and complete a perfect 10-0 conference season. On Tuesday, the Las Vegas shortstop went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs in a 16-1 win over the Rams. Two days later, he was 3-for-3 with two triples, three RBIs and three runs in a 14-2 victory over the Jaguars. "He's playing with a lot of confidence right now," Wildcats coach Sam Thomas said. "Everybody looks at his size and thinks this isn't a guy you expect to do things like that. I think he wanted to prove there's a lot more there than meets the eye."
Female Athlete of the Week: JAN GARIS
School: Sierra Vista
Class: Junior
Sport: Softball
Last week: Garis pitched six strong innings in relief and drove in two runs to lead the Mountain Lions to an 8-6 win over Bishop Gorman Friday, putting the first-year school into this week's 4A Sunset Region playoffs. Garis came on to pitch in the second inning and held the Gaels to two runs the rest of the way. She also provided a critical bases-loaded two-RBI single in the second inning, putting her team ahead for good. "When we've gotten behind before, we haven't done a good job of coming back, so that was a big hit for us," Sierra Vista coach Kimberly Anthony said. "After we lost on Thursday, we figured we were out, so to get that second chance was very exciting for us."
