Basic High School's Marine Corps Junior ROTC drill team recently returned with trophies from a meet at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Henderson cadets won the same title they have held for five consecutive years: national champions.
The Basic armed drill team finished third in personnel, first in regulation drill and first in exhibition, earning the overall sweepstakes trophy and the championship. Basic also placed second out of 20 units in the color guard competition.
Earlier this year Basic placed first at a West Coast National Drill Meet in Southern California.
Bonanza grad at missile base
Airman 1st Class William Gaines, Bonanza High School class of 1999, was recently named Airman of the Quarter for the 12th Missile Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont.
Gaines, the son of Cornelius and Rose Gaines, is a security journeyman. He has served in the Air Force for two years. His wife, Desiree, is the daughter of Kevin and Kim Crandall of Las Vegas.
"Gaines' performance raises the standards for his peers and he is considered the squadron's authority on the capability and use of weapons carried by security forces securing Malmstroms' missile field," Lt. Col. Christopher Ayres, the commander of the 12th Missile Squadron, said. "He was also awarded the squadron's 'Sharp Troops' award for exemplary dress and appearance, customs and courtesies and being positive role model."
Officer makes Army bowling team
Maj. Renea Greenlee, a full-time member of the Nevada Army National Guard and the state education officer, is the first Nevada National Guard soldier ever chosen for the Army's Professional Bowling team.
Greenlee, a resident of Carson City, recently returned from the Armed Forces Bowling Championships held at Fort Jackson, S.C.
Each competitor had to bowl six games in four days, and achieve an average of 211 or better. Only six men and six women advanced to the championships, held at the Century Lanes in Fort Jackson.
Greenlee was one of the six and the sole member of the National Guard component to qualify in the country. She took fourth place overall during the tournament with a 215 average.
