State Insurance Commissioner Alice A. Molasky-Arman last week approved requests from two private companies to increase the rates they charge for medical malpractice insurance in Southern Nevada.
Medical Insurance Exchange of California raised its rates for physicians in Clark County by 30 percent, said Peggy Dehl, spokeswoman for the state insurance division. It has 62 Nevada policyholders.
Separately, Michigan-based American Physicians Assurance Corp. will raise its rates from 2 percent to more than 147 percent for some Clark County doctors, depending on their coverage.
Dehl said the company has 146 policyholders, including 59 obstetricians.
