Candidates file for office
Monday, May 6, 2002 | 9:46 a.m.
Candidates lined up this morning at the Clark County Government Center to be among the first to file for county, state and federal office.
Republican assembly candidates showed their party loyalty by filing together in Las Vegas as U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., filed in Carson City for what is expected to be an unopposed re-election campaign.
The filing period for major party candidates runs through May 20 -- a deadline that is quickly approaching for those considering running.
Nevada Stupak, son of gaming maverick Bob Stupak who narrowly lost a Las Vegas City Council race to Gary Reese in 1999, is toying with running against fellow Democrat County Commissioner Myrna Williams.
Stupak said if he can raise $6,000 a day before May 20 he will run.
Today's filing period also prompted some other political decisions. Local businessman Brian Scroggins, a Republican who had intended to run for state Assembly, is now running for the state Senate after Bill Brady withdrew from the race last week.
