Letter: Lease Israeli land to Palestinians
Wednesday, May 1, 2002 | 9:18 a.m.
Concerning the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, why don't we simplify the problem?
The Palestinians want land for peace. OK, let them lease the land from the present owners, the Israelis. The rich Arab nations can show their love and dedication to their Arab brothers by spending some of their oil money on the lease costs.
If peace becomes a permanent partner in the region between all the nations there, let the lease become an option to buy, say in 20 to 50 years. Part of any future land sale would be the right of all people to access holy shrines and have religious festivals. How about teaching children to love rather than hate. Imagine a world of Arab oil money in Israeli banks. What a powerful combine that would be in world affairs.
When something tangible is demanded (land) for something as unreliable as a handshake (the promise of peace), it seems to me that the giver's of real property are at a serious disadvantage. However, let the Arabs put their money where their mouth is, and they'll have something to risk, too.
The Arab reputation around the world has been horribly damaged. It's very hard to take them seriously when they say they will respect any treaty they sign. Their belief in God gives them the right to say or do anything they want, including sending their children wired with bombs to kill themselves and all others. What a pity.
My solution is not perfect. The cost of the lease and helping the new Palestinian nation grow and prosper will be staggering. But at least all the parties will be dealing in a common medium we all understand, money.
Let's stop talking and start walking. Let the negotiations began. The world is tired of waiting.
