Letter: Energy secretary has it all wrong
Friday, March 29, 2002 | 4:16 a.m.
We all know the high-level nuclear wastes issue is not one of national security, as Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham claims in his March 26 letter to the Washington Post. Nuclear wastes are all over the world and have been able to be obtained for at least a generation, and they'll continue to be obtainable. If terrorists want nuclear wastes, they'll get them.
Mr. Abraham accuses anti-Yucca forces of employing scare tactics when he himself does that very thing. Terrorists are not restricted to the United States for nuclear wastes. As a matter of known fact, the countries of the old Soviet republic are prolific sources of bomb and nuclear warhead wastes.
Please, Mr. Abraham, don't insult our intelligence. We all know what the real issue is: States with the votes in Congress don't want to endure the consequences of the waste they've generated. It's that simple, and it's that irresponsible.
