Las Vegas area fishing report: Anglers have tough time at lake

Striped bass are gathering in schools as they prepare for their upcoming spawn. This is making for some difficult fishing conditions because boaters need to spend quite a bit of time on the water searching for the schools.

There have been reports of stripers being caught in recent days in deep water near Black Island. Otherwise, boaters have had little consistent fishing success.

With stripers staging for their spawn, Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) biologists advise boaters to search in areas where the spring fishing has been good in past years. These include the Meadows, Fish Island and Stewart's Point in the Overton Arm and Walker Wash in the Virgin Basin.

Shore fishing has been very slow for stripers with about the only success coming from below the campground at Las Vegas Bay Marina. Several anglers have reported to NDOW that largemouth bass fishing continues to be very slow.

NDOW has concluded its rainbow trout plants. Stocking will resume in the fall when water temperatures are cool enough to allow the plants to take place.

Striped bass fishing continues to be slow in the Cottonwood Cove area for the few anglers who have taken to the water during the past week.

NDOW reports that there was a major die off of aquatic weeds at Cold Springs Reservoir. The weeds have congested around the dam, making shore fishing difficult.

Biologists say that the dieoff should be beneficial and improve fishing conditions.
