Columnist Paula Del Giudice: Big game hunt tags available online in ‘02

Thursday, March 28, 2002 | 11:14 a.m.

Paula Del Giudice's outdoors column appears Thursday. She can be reached at desertdenizens@aol.com.

Applications and regulations brochures for the 2002 big game hunts in Nevada are in the mail. All who applied for tags last year have been mailed applications.

Applications must be received by mail or online by Wildlife Administrative Services in Fallon no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, April 22 to be eligible for this year's tag drawing.

For the first time, the big game tag application is available online at www.huntnevada.com. To aid in processing applications, credit card online applications will also be available, for a $2 fee per tag application.

The benefit of the online application, according to the Nevada Division of Wildlife, is that all applications are checked for accuracy and tag fees will not be subtracted from credit cards unless the applicant is successful in drawing a tag. As usual, residents will need to purchase hunting licenses prior to applying, whether on paper or online.

Non-residents born after Jan. 1, 1960 who have not previously applied for a tag in Nevada will need to apply on paper through the U.S. mail in order to submit proof of hunter education.

Additional information that will assist hunters in applying for tags, including harvest statistics and last year's draw odds, were posted to NDOW's website at www.nevadadivisionofwildlife.org on March 15.

The daily cave tour schedule follows: 9 a.m., 90 minutes; 11 a.m, 60 minutes; 1:30 p.m., 90 minutes; 3:30 p.m., 60 minutes.

Extra tours of Lehman Cave will be offered Friday-Sunday. Tickets are sold on a first come, first-served basis, so an early arrival is recommended. To purchase tickets in advance, telephone (775) 234-7331, extension 242. Tours are limited to 25 participants.

The Lower Lehman Campground is open year-round. It has 11 sites. Water is available at the Visitor Center.

Lehman Caves Gift & Cafe opened for the 2002 season on Monday with limited food service. The hours are 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

For more information or a Great Basin National Park information packet, call (775) 234-7331 extension 0 or check the website at http://www.nps.gov/grba.

The class will cover the basics of fly fishing, including equipment, knots and casting techniques. Fly rods will be provided to anglers who do not have their own.

Advance registration is required and the class size is limited. To enroll, call the Nevada Division of Wildlife at 486-5127, ext. 3504. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The office is closed on state holidays.
