AG’s office still waits for Williams’ fine

Wednesday, March 27, 2002 | 10:17 a.m.

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- Assemblyman Wendell Williams, D-Las Vegas, has failed to make good on his pledge to pay a $3,800 penalty for failing to file or filing late his campaign expenses and contribution reports in the last election.

Williams had agreed to pay the fine by Friday and also to file his report, due in January 2001.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Kateri Cavin said Williams has not sent in his money. And he has filed only half of the campaign report. The expenses section is missing, she said.

Cavin said today she has written Williams another letter telling him to pay up.

Williams could not be reached for comment.

The legislator first faced a $6,800 fine, but he paid $3,000 and agreed to send in the rest by March 22.

Cavin declined to say whether she would file suit against Williams if he did not send in the remaining part of the fine.

Last June Secretary of State Dean Heller turned over to the attorney general's office the names of 60 candidates who either did not submit their campaign reports or filed them late.

The fines for these delinquencies ranged from $25 to $15,000.

Twenty-two of the cases have been closed with 20 of the candidates paying the fines. In one case, the candidate died and in another the individual submitted a receipt proving he submitted his report on time.
