Washoe sets recycling pace

Washoe County officials said Monday the county is the first area in the state to reach the recycling goal of 25 percent set by the Nevada Legislature.
District Health officer Barbara Hunt said 2001 figures show Washoe County at 29 percent. More than 261,000 tons were recycled last year, she said.
A report by the state recently put the statewide average at 14 percent and Clark County at 11 percent.
Hunt said the 29 percent has resulted "in the reduction of waste going to landfills and put us squarely on the road to the ultimate goal of environmental protection."
