Politics, economy taking spotlight

The presentation "Politics, the Economy, and the Presidency," will be given by a panel of national experts in politics and economics at 7:30 tonight at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as part of the Barrick Lecture Series.

Guest speakers include journalist Gloria Borger, economist Frank Cappiello, presidential historian Richard Norton Smith and commentator and moderator Ray Suarez of public television.

Admission is free, ticket are required. Call 895-2787.

Free lecture set at library

A free lecture, "Anger Management in Teens," is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. For more information, call 486-6021.

The program is sponsored by the Division of Child and Family Services, Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.

Tortoise emerges from hibernation

Mojave Max, a Southern Nevada tortoise, emerged from his burrow at Red Rock Canyon at 11:46 a.m. Friday.

Mojave Max, who lives at the Visitors Center, enters a burrow to hibernate every winter and emerges in the spring.

Las Vegas Valley students study the weather, temperatures and other conditions to estimate when they believe Mojave Max will first emerge from his burrow. The entries for this year are being tabulated and are expected to be announced later this week.

Local leaders gather Wednesday

Clark County, the state and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas have scheduled an economic summit for Southern Nevada.

Leaders from business, government and the university have been invited to participate at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, first floor Pueblo Room.

The lieutenant governor's office and the Nevada Development Authority are working in conjunction with the local officials.

County Commission Chairman Dario Herrera said the summit will help local leaders focus on diversifying the economy so Southern Nevada does not rely exclusively on tourism.

Lectures planned on Tuesdays

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center.

Tuesdays all month volunteer staff will give 15-20 minute programs 9 a.m.-noon on a variety of topics.

Also on Tuesday all month the Bureau of Land Management presents "Desert Babies," a program that includes storytelling, crafts and a snack. Preschoolers meet Ranger Kate at 10 a.m. at the Visitors Center.

The Rancho High School Class

of 1962 is planning its 40th reunion in October. All classmates who would like to participate are asked to call Donna Giuffre Martin at 451-3753.

An Alzheimer's program,

"The Journey through Alzheimer's Disease: What You Need to Know," will be 6:30 p.m. April 3 at the North Las Vegas Library. Call 248-2770.
