Passenger count off 8.5 percent in February

The number of passengers arriving and departing from McCarran International Airport was down 8.5 percent to 2.6 million in February, airport statistics released Friday said.

For the first two months of the year, traffic is down 9.1 percent, from 5.6 million in 2001 to 5.1 million this year.

The top three carriers at McCarran all reported declines in February, with No. 1 Southwest down 6.5 percent to 811,261 passengers, America West down 16.8 percent to 376,984 and United off 22 percent to 189,891.

Las Vegas-based National Airlines, the No. 6 McCarran carrier, was down 3.9 percent to 152,358 passengers in February.
