Letter: Ralston slam on Mormons full of hate and bigotry

Friday, March 22, 2002 | 4:49 a.m.

There are so many errors and ironies amongst the verbal grenades lobbed by Jon Ralston's passionately besmirching column on March 17, "GOP adopts anti-gay agenda," that given the limited space for a response, I'll speak to the most "obnoxious."

I am LDS and some of my best friends are "Mormon" too, (maybe even Republican). Amazingly, despite his worn-out generalizations, we have these qualities:

We actually think for ourselves in matters political.

We support the "traditional family structure," which he as labels "obnoxious." This family unit has been validated by professionals in the secular world as the foundation of a stable, successful society.

Please check your dictionary (again) for the definition of a cult.

We don't "turn out" as mindless robots to provide votes, for or against.

What's the most pathetic about the article is its tone of condemnation of Mormons as people of "hate and bigotry," whose support of traditional families is "obnoxious," who "will have a difficult time ignoring ... a church directive" and, finally, the "faux Republican descendants" should go to hell.

How is his message different from any other message of "hate and bigotry"?
