Letter: Lottery could succeed here
Friday, March 22, 2002 | 9:34 a.m.
When I read the Sun's March 13 editorial, "State-run lottery is a bad bet," I thought that through some cruel misfortune I had been delivered that Republican rag, the Review-Journal.
You are against a Nevada state lottery because it has failed to do as advertised in other states, has been mismanaged, and otherwise should be deemed a failure elsewhere. So what!
You failed to see the opportunity for Nevada to at long last be first in something positive, as opposed to trailing the pack in so many things, while trying to lead in the cost of electricity and gasoline taxes.
When you mention that those who spend what little they have on lottery tickets, it makes me wonder why we are currently trying to open more bars in the downtown area (an idea which the Review-Journal supports).
You fail to mention that the casinos of Nevada have never paid there fair share of anything, an oversight perhaps.
The only other people not in favor of a lottery are the casinos! You wouldn't align yourselves with them, would you?
