Insurer moving offices to Henderson

Employers Insurance Company of Nevada intends to move its Southern Nevada office to a Henderson business park in mid-May.
Douglas Dirks, president and chief executive officer of the Reno-based workers' compensation insurer, said his company has signed a lease to occupy 55,000 square feet of office space at 2550 Paseo Verde Parkway. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Dirks said the site, in the Green Valley Corporate Center South office park, was selected for its access to high-speed telecommunications lines and proximity to Interstate 215. The mutual insurance company's approximately 160 local employees will relocate to the Henderson office, Dirks said.
Following staff reductions made when EICON converted from state ownership to a private company in January 2000, the company announced last December it had sold its 186,000-square-foot Las Vegas office complex at 1700 W. Charleston Blvd. to UNLV for $13.5 million. The university plans to use the site as the home of its proposed dental school.
EICON is the largest workers' compensation insurer in Nevada and is owned by approximately 12,000 employer policy holders.
The Greenspun Corporation's American Nevada Corp. owns the Green Valley Corporate Center South office park. The Greenspun family owns the Las Vegas Sun and The Greenspun Corporation.
Phillip Peckman, chief operating officer of The Greenspun Corporation, is chairman of the board of EICON.
Peckman was not involved in EICON's decision to lease space in a project developed by his company.
"I'm glad they came to the building," Peckman said. "I did not vote on the (site). The other members of the board of directors handled it without me and later assured me that this was the best economic deal for EICON of all the deals they looked at."
